Choosing the Right Farm Fencing for Goats

Choosing the right type of farm fencing is key to the overall safety and health of your goats, as it will not only keep the goats from escaping but also prevent predators from entering the enclosure. In most cases, goats require the use of two different fencing applications: temporary farm fencing and permanent farm fencing.

Temporary Farm Fencing

Temporary farm fencing is often used to keep bucks away from does, as well as weaned kids away from does. For this farm fencing application, poly tape or wire, electric netting, or even high-tensile electric wiring are all suitable choices; however, if you choose to use high-tensile electric wiring, you will need to use five to seven strands of wire (spaced about 6″ apart) to prevent the goats from escaping.

Permanent Farm Fencing

Much like temporary farm fencing applications, permanent farm fencing can also be constructed from high-tensile wire; however, woven wire fencing tends to be the most popular farm fencing for goats, as it provides a sturdier perimeter fencing that even smaller predators have a hard time getting through. Woven wire fencing can also be coupled with a strand of electric or barbed wire at the top to prevent the goats from jumping over the fence.

Setting the Right Fence Height for Goats

Since goats are good jumpers, it is important to ensure that the farm fencing is set to the right height in order to keep the goats properly contained. While a 3-foot fence can work for some breeds of goats, such as adult Nigerian Dwarf or miniature goats, most breeds of goats require a 4- to 5-foot fence to prevent them from jumping over the farm fencing.
